The Poppy Project, a pioneer of specialist services for women subjected to sexual trafficking  based in London, is fighting for its life. Run by the Eaves Housing charity, more than 700 women have been assisted since the project started in 2003, 15% of whom are women living with HIV.

The project has lost out on a bid from the Ministry of Justice to the Salvation Army who will ‘gate keep’ the contract worth £6million and will subcontract specialised services. Eaves said the move marked a change in the way government supported care for the victims of trafficking, ‘they were after a bare minimum service not a specialised service.’

The charity helps women with rehabilitation and counselling, offers computer computer skills training and advice on entering the job market. Eaves Housing has helped secure more than 500 years imprisonment in convictions against traffickers.

The project say they need to raise £450,000 by the end of June to continue their work.
